Bel Gaufre: A taste from Belgium

A family breakfast in bed is certainly the best way to start your day, especially if you have some good Belgian waffles with you. This month, we meet the Quebec campany Bel Gaufre. We talk with Amélie Lépine in order to learn more about this well-known company.

How did the adventure of Bel Gaufre begin?

The concept of Bel Gaufre was born in 1978 in Quebec in the head of a Belgian couple who wanted to share a well-known dish of their hometown to the people here. Initially, the idea was implemented in restaurants. Did you know that Bel Gaufre has more than 21 restaurants? Then, from restaurant owner to producer, Bel Gaufre marketed their featured product, Belgian waffles, in superstores including grocery stores and some Costco. In 2012, the company was bought by a new enthusiast couple, that commercialize the Belgian waffles beyond  Quebec borders.

Some interesting facts about Bel Gaufre

  • Bel Gaufre is the leading supplier of Belgian waffles in Canada;
  • Bel Gaufre has always had the same original recipe for over 40 years;
  • Our waffle was voted the best waffle on the show L'Épicerie;
  • Our biggest challenge has been to move from artisan to industrial mode while keeping our winning recipe!

What changed since the new owners took over?

Today, our waffles are being sold by all the main grocery store chains and at all Costco locations in Quebec. Production has been increased with the integration of a semi-automated factory. It allows us to produce in larger quantities and meet our clientele’s demand. Previously, we had a maximum production of 6,000 waffles a day. Today, we have reached a capacity of 32,000 waffles per day.

Where can we buy your products?

As mentioned above, our products are available at all 19 Costco stores in the province. In addition, you can find our products on the shelves of IGA, Metro, Provigo and Maxi, which represents more than 800 points of sale. Also, we are proud to say that Bel Gaufre has conquered Ontario, the United States and Mexico.

What are your next projects with Bel Gaufre?

It goes without saying that we want to continue our momentum and increase production. We always see bigger! In a near future, we want to buy a larger production line to meet the needs of the growing demand of our clients. Moreover, we have just acquired the land next to our present location.  You’ll hear even more about us for sure!
