Originally from the Middle East, zahtar (or zaatar) means thyme in Arabic. The flavor of thyme predominates here, but with the tartness of sumac. It is widely used with olive oil, which is spread on pita bread before baking for breakfast. Zahtar is said to have brain-boosting properties. Lebanese children eat large quantities before exams! Try it with vegetables, lamb, hamburgers or pizzas. Its flavor is truly unique. We offer a sodium-free version.
