FEATURED COMPANY
There's no couch potatoes at Dolbec!
As far as comfort food goes, there is nothing better than a good stew with Quebec potatoes. In this article, we will be learning about the Patates Dolbec family business and Josée Petitclerc, Director of Marketing and R&D. We will be highlighting this industry, which is unknown to many consumers.
How did Dolbec Potatoes become the company we know today?
The Dolbed family has been in the potato business for a very long time! It’s all because of our passion for agri-food and hard work that we have won Quebeckers' hearts. The history of Patate Dolbec started 50 years ago, in 1967. With 25 acres of land, a horse and a plow; that's all we needed to build the company we know today. Now, we are proud to have more than 10,000 acres of land, 15 varieties of potatoes and 125 employees.
What makes your potatoes different from others on the market?
At Patates Dolbec, we have our own laboratories to start our sprouts, our seed farms and our table farms. Also, our warehouses allow us to keep our crops 12 months a year and thus ensure the packaging and shipping of our products throughout the year. In short, the whole culture process is managed by our Dolbec specialists. In our labs, we can make our own experiences to create new varieties with unique taste and texture!
How does your production work? Does it take place 365 days a year?
We are proud to supply supermarkets in the province 365 days a year! Although harvests are only in July, we store our potatoes in our controlled atmosphere warehouses, which allows us to package and sell 12 months a year. Our production consists of seeds from late April to May, harvest in July and storage in September.
What is your best culinary tip for preparing Dolbec Potatoes?
Without a doubt, our best tip is to rely on our special series of Perfect Potatoes. We are making it easy for you to choose the right kind of potatoes. You can rely on the name on the packing – for the oven, fries, BBQ, or mashed potatoes – to make sure you choose the best for your needs. In fact, several recipes and cooking tips are available on the website patatesparfaites.ca
From your own experience, what is Quebecers’ favorite potato?
Without a doubt, Russet! Its great variety that pleases Quebecers... especially for poutine! However, we have noticed in the last years an increased demand for yellow potatoes. Of course, the small “Creamers” kind is getting even more popular.
In 5 years, where would you like to see Potates Dolbec?
Heading towards a 4th generation leading the company is undoubtedly a vision and a realistic goal for Patates Dolbec. In addition to this achievement, we want to increase our acreage to develop more unique varieties! The whole team at Patates Dolbec is helping to become a leader in the potato market in both Quebec and Canada.
