Why is chia seed so popular?
For some years now, the chia seed has made its way into Quebec homes, but why is it called a "superfood"?
What is chia?
Commonly called chia seed, it is the seeds of a plant called Salvia hispanica that apparently was cultivated for the first time by the Aztec and Mayan civilizations.
Health benefits
It goes without saying that chia seeds have several benefits. For example, they’re an excellent source of fiber, which is an important factor in weight control. Once consumed, chia seeds expand. This helps with an increased satiety after meals and reduce food intake.
Chia is also a good plant-based protein source. It contains all the essential amino acids that are usually found in meat.
Chia seeds contain large amounts of omega-3 fatty acids, which may improve risk factors for heart disease.
They’re also a good source of iron, calcium and antioxidants, which are essential for maintaining a healthy and balanced diet.
Recipe tips
Chia seed pudding is a must! Because of their ability to absorb liquid and form a gel, they’re great for a pudding texture. They also can be used to thicken sauces, in smoothies, morning groats, salads or yogurt topper, etc.
True or False: " Black chia is better than white chia "
Yes and no. In fact, both seeds can be used in the same ways and have the same health benefits. However, given its color, black chia has a little more antioxidants.
Cooking tip
Chia seeds are an amazing binding agent! It’s great to replace eggs in recipes, in case of a food allergy. Simply mix 1 tbsp ground chia with 3 tbsp water and let it soak until it forms a gel.
